Masterpiece Sculpture! Museum quality Piece
Billy Merkosak is one of my favourite Inuit carvers.
He never fails to meet my expectations.
Case in point.....this stunning Shaman sculpture.
Did you know that the word "shaman" means literally "one who knows".
An Inuit shaman acts as a religious leader or healer and possesses mysterious, powerful and sometimes superhuman abilities.
Sometimes, Inuit Shamans act as an intermediary between the natural and supernatural world.
This shaman face has been captured as the shaman is transforming from caribou to man or man to caribou.
I am going to suggest that he is transforming from a caribou back to a human.
What remains of his caribou self is part of one antler. The other has already disappeared.
As the caribou visage melts away, the decorated human face is morphing back to its human face.
The Sage has a long road to travel on his way back to being human.
The face is so complex I think the best way to describe the impact of this piece on the viewer is to say "A picture is worth a thousand words"!!!
