Tiulana carved OPEN WIDE in the 1960s on the Canadian DEW Line.
The DEW Line was the Distant Early Warning Line which was a system of Cold War radar and communication stations built across the Arctic to detect incoming Soviet bombers and missiles.
There were more than 60 radar installations.
It stretched about 5000 km from northwestern Alaska, across the Canadian Arctic and into Greenland and Iceland.
Built by the USA and Canada starting in 1954, it ran until 1993.
The goal was to give North American defense forces early warning against a polar attack from the Soviet Union.
Local Inuit communities participated in the construction and operations. The project brought major cultural disruption and left behind environmental waste.
The DEW Line was phased out and replaced by the modern North Warning System in 1993.
Open Wide is an exquisite ivory Walking bear carved in a minimalist fashion.
One can picture this courageous Polar bear walking from base to base, defending his Arctic home.|
Do you love history? Imagine being the steward of this exceptional bear!
