I dare say that you will NEVER see Inuit carvings as readily identifiable as these transformations from Gjoa Haven.
If you are an avid Inuit art collector, can you think of any Arctic sculpture that screams "Cape Dorset" or ""Sanikiluaq"?
But you see these fish transformations with the thick ridges and the large inset eyes and you immediately know this piece is from Gjoa Haven.
I love the quirkiness of these sculptures.
They are often cheerful and confusing at the same time.
Often, the piece has more than one head and yet only one body!
Clayton Keknek excels at creating these enchanting carvings.
The serpentinite stone is prevelant in Gjoa Haven.
It is smooth and silky with a matte finish. It often contains deposits of copper and green.
You seldom see this stone used for carving outside the Gjoa Haven region.
Your Inuit art collection cannot be complete without a selection of Gjoa Haven carvings.
When you fall in love with their winsome personalities, you will never get enough.
