In this intriguing and ambitious work, Uttaq presents us with a carving that exhibits all the traditional features of a classic Muskox; the exaggerated "humped" shoulders, the regal horns and the dense long coat of hair.
I truly admire carvings from distant Northern communities like Gjoa Haven. These carvings are unique and original, not at all like other Inuit carvings. These artists strive to carve in a traditional manner depicting the real animal in its natural setting.
This muskox is clearly unique and is carved in a traditional Gjoa Haven fashion.
Its beauty is exemplary. The muskox is one of my favourite Arctic mammals and I am always searching for the next great Muskox sculpture.
I particularly love the face of this creature. To me, it has an exotic, slightly Asian look which I have never seen before. The black matte stone romanticizes the sheer power and size of this beast.
Uttaq's work is consistent in its loving depiction of all his subjects.
As a group of artists, the Gjoa Haven carvers honor the natural spirit of their animal inspirations.
I can see this piece in the foreground of a diverse Inuit art collection. Or it would be an exceptional gift for a novice collector or as a "one of" for the special person in your life or a colleague.
